Transfer Credits

The Faculty of Applied Science welcomes transfer students from other post-secondary institutions and from other UBC Faculties. If you are interested in applying to UBC Engineering, please find more information on Admissions for post-secondary transfer students.

You can receive advanced credits from completing AP, IB, or A-Level in high school, or receive transfer credits from another post-secondary institution. Use this resource to determine what credits you will receive, and how to apply them to your UBC BASc Degree.

General Transfer Credit Information

View Your Transfer Credits

If you are a current UBC student and have been awarded transfer credits, you can view your transfer credits on your Student Service Centre (SSC), following the pathway below. The exception are students who held a degree prior to entering UBC Engineering (see Prior Degree Holder information below).

From the SSC > Grades & Records > Transfer Credits > Indicate UBC Vancouver on the drop-down menu

AP, IB or A-Level credits are added to your SSC in late summer. If your transfer credits have not yet been added by Enrolment Services, review the First-year Credit page to see which UBC credits you will receive when they are added to your academic record.

Transfer Credits and Sessional Average

Grades from advanced or transfer credits will be used to determine your year level standing and counted towards your degree requirements. They will NOT be used in any UBC GPA calculations after entering the program. For example, Second Year Placement or consideration for the Engineering Co-op Program will not use the grades from transfer credits.

If you enter the BASc program in year 2 or above, your admission average will be used for the Second Year Placement process or admission to the Engineering Co-op Program. You will also be required to go through these applications immediately upon admission.

Retaking Courses and Transfer Credits Forfeiture

If you retake a course at UBC for which you have received advanced credits from AP, IB, or A-Level, or have received transfer credits from another post-secondary institution, you may forfeit the advanced or transfer credits.

For post-secondary transfer credits, some departments may not permit registration in a course for which you have already received credits.

It is your responsibility to ensure you meet all your program requirements, including courses which you have not received advanced or transfer credits.

Unassigned Credits and Transfer Credit Assessment Request

If you have received unassigned transfer credits (i.e. APSC 1st, MATH 2nd), you can request an assessment to determine if these credits can be applied to your degree requirements via the link below.

Use the UBC Academic Calendar to check your program requirements and view the Course Descriptions to see if there is a high level of overlap in content between what you have studied previously and the UBC course.

A transfer credit assessment request can take between 6 – 8 weeks to complete from the time you submitted the request, to when you are notified of the outcome. In the meantime, you will need to register for the courses you have requested transfer credits, in case the assessment is not successful. You will have until the course drop deadline to modify your registration.

Advanced Credit (AP, IB or A-Level)

First-year Credit

If you have completed university-level courses while in high school, you may be able to receive advanced credits. Find out which AP, IB or A-Level courses are eligible for first-year credits at UBC.

How to apply AP, IB or A-Level credits to the BASc Program

It is recommended that you complete the Chemistry, Math and Physics courses in the first year even if you have received advanced credits from AP, IB or A-Level for these courses. The first-year engineering program is designed to build a strong foundation and enable your success in your upper-level courses.

If you proceed and complete a course with a final grade for which you have already received credits from AP, IB or A-Level, the UBC attempt will supersede the credits granted from AP, IB or A-Level.

If you decide to proceed and drop a course from your timetable after having received UBC credits from AP, IB or A-Level, you do not need to do anything further. The credits will apply automatically towards your degree requirements where applicable. A percentage grade is not assigned to these credits. For second year placement, the average is calculated on courses attempted at UBC in the Winter Session only. Your AP, IB or A-Level credits will apply to the number of credits you have, to determine your eligibility to be promoted to a second year standing.

  • ENGL 1st (3) or WRCM 1st (3) will satisfy the first-year English/Communication requirement (ie: WRDS 150B/ ENGL 112 / First Year English Course)
  • ENGL 1st (6) or WRCM 1st (3) + ENGL 1st (3) will satisfy the first-year English/Communication (ie: WRDS 150B/ ENGL 112 / First Year English Course) and 3 credits of humanities and social science requirements

IMPORTANT

  • Do not drop courses from your timetable until you see the credits on your SSC Transfer Credit page. You have until the course drop deadline to drop courses without a Withdrawal (‘W’) standing on your academic record
  • ECON 1st does not satisfy the pre-requisite for courses that require ECON 101 or ECON 102
  • AP CPSC 1st (3) does not cover APSC 160
  • Only 3 credits of language courses may be applied toward the humanities and social science requirements

Post Secondary Transfer Credit

Prospective Students

If your courses have a currently assessed transfer agreement with UBC, you may be able to find their transfer agreement on the BC Transfer Guide and/or UBC Transfer Credit Search Tool.

If your courses do not appear on either of these tools, a request for evaluation of transfer credits will only be assessed if you have been admitted and have accepted UBC’s offer of admission.

Coordinated International Experience (CIE) and Go Global Exchange Programs

CIE Course Mapping

The Coordinated International Experience (CIE) exchange program enables Applied Science students to study for up to two terms at one of our international partner institutions while earning credits that can apply towards their UBC degree. CIE partner institutions have world-class engineering programs and have been specifically selected to complement your UBC studies. The CIE exchange program offers a high level of support to students who are preparing to go abroad, and every effort is made to provisionally map how the courses you take at our partner institution will apply to your UBC degree before you depart.

Find which courses from CIE partner institutions have been pre-mapped and can be applied towards your BASc degree requirements from CIE Course Mapping database.
